+ How do you read a screenplay? – workshop with screenplay-analysis licentiates
During the festival, the Cinemascop Association, organizer of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest, continues to run, just as in previous years, workshops for several Romanian film communities, in the hopes of lending a hand to their members.
How do you read a screenplay? is a workshop that stems from the following reality: annualy, all over the world, in Romania alike, a handful of people read thousands and thousands of sceenplays looking to obtain financing – it is based on their analysis that millions of euros are allocated to filmmaking. Who are these people? What attributes and qualifications do or should they have? What have Romanian lecturers achieved? Who chooses them and based on what criteria? Do national screenplays need to be analyzed only by fellow countrymen? Two professional screenplay lecturers will try to provide answers to these questions, using their own experience: Jacques Akchoti, screenwriting and film direction professor at the prestigious French film school La Femis, involved in several international programmes for developing screenplays, among which EAVE, Sud Ecriture, DV8 films, Vision Cinema, Ekran, Interchange, and Nicolas Livechi, professional cinema and television screenplay lecturer for Why Not Productions (France). The How do you read a screenplay? Workshop will take place on Friday, 25th October, at Elvire Popesco Cinema.
At the same time, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest organizes on the 24th, 25th and 26th October the fourth edition of Managing Talents, the programme aiming to facilitate the encounter between Romanian actors and casting agents from abroad. This year’s edition puts forth a masterclass by Manuel Puro, casting agent and a professionist who worked alongside Guillermo del Toro, Cate Blanchett or Rachel Weisz, as well as an open casting session for roles in the film Tatăl mută munții – Father moves mountains, directed by Daniel Sandu, a Mobra Film prodction.
After three editions of Managing Talents during which Romanian actors complained about not finding out when film castings take place, Cinemascop Association decided to organize an open casting session for a real project. All interested actors can send, between 8th and 15th October, a self tape with a casting audition for the film role, and the shortlisted actors for the final phase will be announced at the ending ceremony of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest, on 27th October.
The casting text (for both feminine and masculine roles, for actors aged 18 through 35 and over 35), the programme rules, as well as further details on the film can be found on filmedefestival.com, under the section Managing Talents.
The casting sessions will be held in Romanian, with the support of casting director Floriela Grapini. Manuel Puro’s masterclass along with the discussions he will have with the actors will be in English.
The workshop takes place at PRO Cinema and will start on Thursday, 24th October, 10:30am, with a working meeting with the ones who signed up for the programme.
The „How to make an effective self-tape” masterclass, with Manuel Puro, will take place on Friday, 25th October, starting 10:30am; at the end, the participants will be able to dialogue with the casting agent. On the same day, after the conference, the PRO Cinema foyer will turn into a studio. Actors who will not have managed to send a casting audition previously will be able to record self-tapes right on the spot, using what they’ve learned at the conference.
On the third day of Managing Talents, Saturday, 26th October, starting 10:30am, a new casting session will take place, based on the sent self-tapes, taking into account the ones created during the laboratory the previous day.
Professional actors, as well as film and acting students and nonprofessional actors, are all eligible for the casting. Managing Talents is free of admission, and is open to both participants and the public.
Manuel Puro has over 20 years of casting experience, having worked for feature films, TV series, video games, commercials and short films, He started his career in 1995 as casting assistant and has worked with all the great filmmakers, including Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Roeg or Richard Attenborough.
