The second edition of the American Independent Film Festival will be bringing screenings in alternative locations to audiences this year. Alongside films at CinemaPRO and Muzeul Țăranului Cinema, KUSO premiered at Sundance in 2017, will be screened on Sunday, April 29th, at 8:30pm in Control Club. |
Sundance 2017’s biggest “splat”, described by Pitchfork “the most vile body-horror film ever made,” a “scatological fantasia” by Variety and “transgressive” by the Playlist, Steve Ellison’s (aka Flying Lotus) KUSO is easily one of the most curious and impressive feature debuts.
In a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles hit by a devastating earthquake, KUSO brings together four stories of people on the extremes of eccentricity, a couple exploring their desires and conjugral fantasies, a bullied kid’s daily escapades to the forest where he befriends a mysterious alien creature, a Hip Hop MC living with two extraterrestrials discovers she’s pregnant and attends a clinic run by George Clinton (of Parliament Funkadelic) to resolve the issue and a woman buried underground is looking for her kid.
Channelling Hieronymous Bosch and the cinema of Troma Studios and the Kuchar Brothers, KUSO is a mind-altering blend of live-action, CGI and Dadaist collage, where bodily secretions and psycho-sexual deviations are filtered through a singular directorial vision, psychedelic in execution and creatively subversive.
An experience you will not want to miss – if you can handle it, that is.
The great-nephew of jazz legends Alice and John Coltrane, Steven Ellison (aka Flying Lotus) is an established musician signed to Warp Records, hailed for his multi-genre albums (Los Angeles 2008, Cosmogramma 2010, You’re Dead 2014). His latest work was the soundtrack for the 2017 short film Blade Runner Blackout 2022 (a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runer 2049).
KUSO premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2017, where it stirred controversy for its boundary-pushing content (Verge Magazine called it “the grossest movie ever made”).
