Each group will work on fictional scenes under the guidance of Julien Javions, exploring different dramatic situations and the emotions that may naturally arise within them.
The work will take place in front of the camera, with particular attention paid to the authenticity of the performance, the precision of intentions, and the modulation of emotional intensity.
The footage produced during the workshop may be used for self-analysis and, depending on the results, as material for a professional showreel.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
The 10 Most Common Emotions on Screen
What are the emotions most frequently encountered in films and television series?
This workshop offers a practical working framework based on the filming of fictional scenes, designed to explore and develop key skills for acting on screen.
The work will focus in particular on:
- Genuine engagement with a dramatic situation.
- The character’s conflicts, intentions, and actions.
- Subtext and the character’s inner life.
- The natural emergence of emotion.
- Modulating emotional intensity without losing authenticity.
- Precision in front of the camera.
A PROFESSIONAL APPROACH – EMOTION IS A CONSEQUENCE, NOT AN OBJECTIVE
For an actor, emotion is not an outcome that should be deliberately produced. It arises primarily from genuine involvement in a specific situation experienced by a character facing one or more conflicts.
Emotion is often connected to subtext, the character’s past, and everything taking place beyond the spoken dialogue.
When it becomes perceptible on screen, emotion reveals what words leave unsaid. It gives the audience access to the depth of the character’s inner life.
This mechanism is essential in cinema: it allows viewers to develop empathy, immerse themselves in a story, and form an emotional connection with the characters.
For this reason, emotions will not be assigned in advance as performances the actors are expected to produce. Instead, they will be explored through the situations, relationships, and conflicts proposed to the actors.
The aim is not to perform an emotion in itself, but to create the conditions in which it can emerge naturally, while allowing the actor to explore different levels of intensity without losing the authenticity of the performance.
JULIEN JAVIONS is an award-winning French actor, director, and acting coach. In 2018, he received the awards for Best Acting and Best Directing at the 48H Film Project. Throughout his experience in theatre and film, he has continuously practised, observed, analysed, theorised, and researched acting techniques, as well as the ways in which they are taught and their practical effectiveness.
In 2013, he founded Maison des Acteurs, an itinerant film school for actors, with the aim of helping performers adapt their techniques to the specific demands of acting for the screen. His dual experience as both an actor and a director, combined with his practical understanding of the challenges actors face at every level, has shaped a pedagogical approach that offers fertile ground for exploration and creation to any actor wishing to develop their personal skills and communication tools.
Maison des Acteurs is one of the few itinerant acting schools offering systematic training under real filming conditions.

Film Acting Masterclasses with the Cast of Fjord at Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara
Two sessions dedicated to film acting, drawing on the experience of two of the actors from Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord: Lisa Carlehed and Adrian Titieni. The two masterclasses bring together perspectives from Romanian and international cinema, offering complementary approaches to working in front of the camera, character building, the actor-director relationship, and precision in performance. Participants will have the opportunity to discover, from within the profession, the processes and choices that give depth to a cinematic performance.
📅 Participation is free of charge, and registration is available online, by completing this form by October 23rd (inclusive).
The event is intended for professional and amateur actors, students of acting, film or theatre, as well as directors, screenwriters, producers, educators, and other professionals or enthusiasts interested in film acting and the process of working in front of the camera.
