Triangle of Sadness, Palme d’Or 2022, will have its national premiere at

Les Films de Cannes à Bucharest

The 13th edition will take place in Bucharest from October 21st to 30th

This year’s edition of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest, which runs from October 21st to 30th, 2022, is one of certainties. Times are still uncertain and troubled, but over time, the festival has become a constant, a pole of stability in Romanian cultural life. Despite all the historical and social storms, despite all the restrictions, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest has managed to turn each edition into an enthusiastic celebration of cinephilia.

Year after year, without interruption, the festival has continued to bring the best of international cinema and stimulate national cinema. The tone is set at Cannes: throughout the past 12 editions, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest has observed and popularised the trends launched by the world’s biggest film event, which are then spread and disputed around the world. It has encouraged Romanian actors and filmmakers to participate in this creative fervour and has brought them face to face with professionals in the field. All this, with energy, effort, and a bit of luck. Overcoming fears and superstitions of all kinds, we propose an edition that leaves aside the clichés, convenience, propaganda, prejudices and fears established in the collective mind by Hollywood films.

With each edition, the festival has become more ambitious and more adventurous, because nothing is more powerful than the moving image. “I became interested in filmmaking because the image is very, very powerful when it comes to changing human behaviour,” said Swedish director Ruben Östlund, winner of the Palme d’Or in 2022 for yet another caustic, unclassifiable masterpiece, which will have its national premiere at Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest.

“Wild satire” – that’s how one of Europe’s most original filmmakers describes his films. The enfant terrible of contemporary Swedish cinema, Ruben Östlund doesn’t want his audience to be comfortable. He proposes a cinema of discomfort that hilariously pierces bourgeois pretensions and dismantles the fragile structures of contemporary society.

“Östlund’s characters are invariably vain, self-serving charlatans, deserving of the comeuppance that heads their way when a catastrophic life event demolishes their veneers of respectability. Men, especially, don’t get it easy in Östlund’s cosmic order, where the sharp end of his satirical stick is saved for skewering the feeble pomposity of the male ego,” writes Mubi.

His brutally funny films gleefully and mischievously undermine Sweden’s self-image, which is doggedly guarded as a bastion of progressive liberalism. With subversive glee, Östlund tests the limits of his nation’s sociological ideals, often recording from afar, like a wildlife photographer who has stumbled, with amazement, upon an alien species.

In Triangle of Sadness, distributed in Romania starting on November 11th by Independența Film, winner of the supreme trophy at Cannes, the social hierarchy is overturned, revealing the distasteful relationship between power and beauty. A famous model couple, Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), are invited on a luxury cruise for the very wealthy, led by a rakish sea captain (Woody Harrelson). What at first seems Instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a deserted island and fighting for survival. This modern fable about rights and power dynamics is also a strong contender for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In Cannes, Triangle of Sadness was one of the most talked about films of the festival. Östlund here navigates new waters, delivering a provocative, grotesque and biting satire about the eternal class struggle.

“Utterly unhinged in the best way possible, guaranteed to elicit enough laughter to make your stomach ache, while also leaving you with plenty to think about afterwards” –  Alysha Prasad for Room with a View.

The Autumn Preview section is back, richer than ever: Romanian films to be released in cinemas will premiere at LFDC.13. Also returning is the Managing Talents programmes, which focus on the needs of the acting community, WiP – Work in Progress – an initiative that aims to showcase film projects still in the works by Romanian filmmakers to international film industry professionals.

The screenings of this year’s most awarded Cannes films will take place at Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinema Muzeul Țăranului and Cinemateca Eforie.

This year’s edition will also pay tribute to an international auteur with a retrospective in their presence. We will soon reveal this year’s special guest as well as other prominent directors and talent we will be welcoming to Bucharest and new details about this year’s selection and about the local editions of the festival.
