(October 19–22) This edition is dedicated to gender equality in cinema.
From October 19 to 22, Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara puts a spotlight on cinema created by women. Of the 18 feature films in the Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara program, 10 are directed by filmmakers from Austria, France, Tunisia, and Italy: Jessica Hausner, Justine Triet (Palme d’Or winner), Maïwenn, Kaouther Ben Hania (Best Documentary at Cannes 2023), Catherine Corsini, Delphine Gleize, Iris Kaltenback, and Lubna Playoust. Five of these filmmakers will be present in Timișoara during the festival: Maïwenn, presenting the opening projection of Jeanne du Barry, accompanied by actress Alina Șerban; Chiara Malta for Linda veut du poulet!, a film dedicated to the young audience and also opening Animest this year; Delphine Gleize, the director of Carnage; Catherine Corsini, the director of Le Retour; and Lubna Playoust, presenting her film, Chambre 999. In addition, the audience in Timișoara will have the opportunity to watch a selection of short films from Romania, directed by Dana Rogoz in her directorial debut, Catrinel Dănăiață, and Laura Baron, both also present in Timișoara.
The screenings will take place at Timiș and Victoria cinemas from Thursday, October 19, to Sunday, October 22.

The Gender Equality in Cinema Conference is scheduled for Saturday, October 21, starting at 4:00 PM, aiming to facilitate a discussion on equal opportunities in cinema, spanning from the international to the local context, featuring insights from directors, producers, actresses, casting directors, and film schools. The speakers are French film directors Delphine Gleize and Catherine Corsini, Chiara Malta from Italy, Catrinel Dănăiață, Laura Baron, Dana Rogoz, in a dual role as an actress and director, actress Anamaria Marinca, casting director Ulrike Müller from Germany, with an impressive career, and Julia Patry, a representative of the casting platform filmmakers.eu, providing the perspective of a young active mother in the casting world.
Managing Talents, the program designed for actors within Les Films de Cannes, features a special edition in Timișoara this year. The program includes two masterclasses conducted by casting director Ulrike Müller (Germany) and Julia Patry, a representative of filmmakers.eu, the largest actor database in Europe. Actor and acting trainer Julien Javions will lead an interactive workshop where 18 participants will have the opportunity to work on the spot using an innovative technique called “analysis in action.” For details and registrations, please visit the website.
Delphine Gleize is a French director, screenwriter, and actress with an extensive career in cinema. Her film Carnages (2002), which will be screened at Les Films de Cannes, is a dark romantic comedy with an original premise. It explores how the destinies of people from Belgium, France, and Spain are altered after encountering what remains of a bull following a bullfight. Starring Chiara Mastroianni and Angela Molina, Carnages received the Prix de la Jeunesse at Cannes in 2002.
Chiara Malta has directed several short films, including a trilogy dedicated to childhood, which has received awards at international festivals. Her first feature film, Simple Women, opened the Discovery section at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019. Linda veut du poulet! is her first animated feature film, selected for the Cannes Film Festival – ACID (May 2023) and awarded the Crystal for Best Feature Film at the Annecy Festival (June 2023). The screening at Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara will take place at 3:00 PM, accommodating the schedules of families and children (the screening is suitable for ages 7 and above).
Catrinel Dănăiață is a Romanian film and television director and screenwriter. Her feature film Dublu (2016), stars Bogdan Dumitrache and Maria Dinulescu in the lead roles. Additionally, the audience will have the opportunity to view her short film I’m Ok with Your Last Wish (2022) as part of the short film selection.
Laura Baron is a film editor, film producer, production manager, and professor. Pune-te în locul meu/Walk a mile in my shoes is her debut short film.
Dana Rogoz is one of the most renowned television actresses in Romania, with a rich career in theater and film. La distanță/Remote is her debut short film, both written and directed by her, and it was selected for the official competition at Anonimul.
Ulrike Müller is a renowned casting director from Germany with over 100 films to her credit, and she is the winner of the German Casting Award. Among the films she has worked on are In My Room, directed by Ulrich Köhler, winner of the Cannes Un Certain Regard award, The Theory of Everything, directed by Timm Kröger, and The Promised Land, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, both in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Julia Patry has over 10 years of experience as a casting director’s assistant, working with professionals such as Laurent Couraud and Nathalie Cheron, as well as agencies like Cinéart. Since the beginning of 2022, Julia has been leading operations at Filmmakers Europe, the largest casting platform in Europe, based in France.

Gender Equality in Cinema: The special edition of Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara (19 – 22 October) is part of the National Cultural Program ‘Timișoara – European Capital of Culture in 2023’ and is funded through the European Echoes program, administered by Centrul de Proiecte al Municipiului Timișoara, with allocations from the state budget, through the Ministry of Culture’s budget.
