The American Independent Film Festival starts today in Bucharest

The American Independent Film Festival starts today in Bucharest. The festival takes place between the 15th and the 21st of September and brings together a selection of the most recent independent movies, made in USA. Barry Jenkins, Oscar winning director in 2017, for the Best Motion Picture, will be opening the festival with a live Q&A, via Skype, at the end of the “Moonlight” screening. “You have try to grow as an artist, and challenge yourself, and find new people, who can inspire you and great people with whom you can work. I was very lucky I started off my first movie with Sean Penn and Brian De Palma. And Sean was an early mentor, and in the beginning, he said: now that you did this you have to try to do things as good or better than what you have already done, because you are defined by your last role” says John C. Reilly in an interview for the Festival, that can be read in Romanian on the American Independent Film Festival website. In honour of the presence of the actors John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix in Romania, for the shooting  on the the international production “The Sisters Brothers” directed by Jacques Audiard, on September 16 the festival will screen the films “The Little Hours” and “Hard Eight”. John C. Reilly will be attending the festival depending on the hour at which shooting for film will end on Saturday. Joaquin Phoenix will also be present on Saturday, for the screening of “Her”.

The International production of “The Sisters Brothers” directed by Jacques Audiard, has also brought to Bucharest costume designer Milena Canonero, winner of four Oscars for Costume Design, for “Barry Lyndon” (1975), “Chariots of Fire (1981), “Marie Antoinette” (2006) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014). Honouring her presence in Bucharest, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” will be playing Saturday, September 16, at 18:30 at Cinemateca Eforie, within the American Independent Film Festival. Milena Canonero began her carrier working with director Stanley Kubrik, and her portfolio includes collaborations with renowned directors, like Alan Parker, Hugh Hudson, Francis F. Coppola, Roman Polanski and Sofia Coppola. She has also designed costumes for Opera productions, for Scala Di Milano, the Opera of Vienna and the Metropolitan Opera.

The Focus Ethan Hawke section of the festival will bring the American actor closer to the public for the screenings of “Born to Be Blue” (21:00, September 19th, CinemaPRO) and “Boyhood” (19:15, September 20th, CinemaPRO), and also for the festival’s closingfilm, when he will be attending a Q&A at the end of the screening of “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” (19:00, September 21st, CinemaPRO).
