A special edition of Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara takes place from the 19th to the 22nd of October.
This year, Les Films de Cannes brings an impressive lineup to Bucharest and Timișoara, featuring the latest films by renowned filmmakers such as Aki Kaurismäki, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and Wim Wenders. A special edition of Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara takes place from the 19th to the 22nd of October, and it is dedicated to the contribution of female filmmakers to contemporary cinema and the issues pertaining to gender representation in related professions within the film industry.
Gender Equality in Cinema: The special edition Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara is part of this year’s exceptional program in Timișoara – European Capital of Culture 2023.
Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest takes place from the 20th to the 29th of October at Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinemateca Eforie, Cinema Union, and Cinema Muzeul Țăranului. A selection of films will be subsequently screened in Cluj-Napoca, Iași, and Arad.
Award-winning films that will be showcased in Timișoara and Bucharest at Les Films de Cannes:
The first films confirmed for this autumn are: the winner of the Palme d’Or 2023, Anatomy of a Fall/L’Anatomie d’une Chute directed by the French filmmaker Justine Triet, and On the Adamant/Sur l’Adamant, the winner of the 2023 Berlin Golden Bear, directed by the French filmmaker Nicolas Philibert. Both will premiere at Les Films de Cannes 2023. In addition to these, the other major award-winning films from Cannes will be screened for the audiences in Timișoara and Bucharest.
The Jury Prize, Cannes 2023, Fipresci Grand Prix: heartwarming, tragic, and comedic all at once, Fallen Leaves is a classic directed by the unmistakable Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. Ansa and Holappa coincidentally meet at a karaoke night in Helsinki, and both harbor hopes of finding their true love on this occasion.
Best Director Award, Cannes 2023: awarded to the French-Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung (known for The Scent of Green Papaya) for The Pot-au-Feu (recently renamed The Taste of Things), a period gourmet film that enjoyed significant public success at Cannes, depicting the culinary and romantic journey of Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) and Dodin (Benoît Magimel).
Best Actress Award, Cannes 2023: Merve Dizdar, for her role in About Dry Glasses directed by the Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who delivers a Chekhovian film that is described as “part love triangle, part ethics lesson, and part critique of the Turkish education system” by The Hollywood Reporter.
Best Actor, Cannes 2023: Kōji Yakusho, for his role as a toilet cleaner in Perfect Days the German-Japanese co-production by one of the world’s greatest directors, Wim Wenders. The film is an ode to the simple joys of life in a world where, with a change in perspective, every day can be perfect.
Gender Equality in Cinema: The special edition of Les Films de Cannes à Timișoara invites a significant number of female filmmakers from Europe to share their work experience with the audience and engage in discussions about their experiences in the European film industry in 2023. The audience from Timișoara will have the opportunity to meet these globally recognized figures in the film industry during the festival’s Q&A sessions.
Anatomy of a Fall/ L’Anatomie d’une Chute, On the Adamant/ Sur l’Adamant and About Dry Glasses are distributed in Romania by Voodoo Films. Fallen Leaves is distributed in Romania by Bad Unicorn. The Pot-au-Feu is distributed in Romania by Independența Film.
