During the 1970s the brothers would make a series of politically engaged documentary films before founding their own production company in 1975: \u201cD\u00e9rives\u201d.\u00a0 Some years later, in 1994, they would found their film company: \u201cLes Films du Fleuve\u201d.\u00a0 They made their first full-length film, \u201cFalsch\u201d, in 1987; it was an adaptation of a theatre play concerning the last surviving member of a Jewish family exterminated by the Nazis.\u00a0 The film would mark a major turning point in their career as their first fictional work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1992 they directed \u201cJe pense \u00e0 vous\u201d, but would have to wait until 1996 before receiving wider recognition at the \u2018Directors Fortnight\u2019 in Cannes with \u201cLa Promesse\u201d (The Promise).\u00a0 They received their first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palme d\u2019Or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Cannes Film Festival for \u201cRosetta\u201d in 1999.\u00a0 Three years later Olivier Gourmet received the Festival\u2019s Best Actor award for his role in \u201cLe Fils\u201d (The Son).\u00a0 In 2005 the brothers received another Palme d\u2019Or for \u201cL\u2019Enfant\u201d (The Child), thus joining the very exclusive club of filmmakers to have won the Palme d\u2019Or on two occasions.\u00a0 Furthermore at Cannes, they would also receive the 2008 Best Screenplay award for \u201cLe Silence de Lorna\u201d (Lorna\u2019s Silence)\u201d, a drama about clandestine immigrants; and the 2011 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Prix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> award for \u201cLe Gamin au V\u00e9lo\u201d (Kid With a Bike).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this they went on to make \u201cDeux jours, une nuit\u201d (Two Days, One Night) with the actress Marion Cotillard and \u201cLa Fille inconnue\u201d (The Unknown Girl) with Ad\u00e8le Haenel.\u00a0 In 2019 they received the Cannes Film Festival\u2019s Best Director award for \u201cLe Jeune Ahmed\u201d (Young Ahmed), a film about the destiny of a teenager embracing Islamic extremism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dardenne brothers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have won a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special 75th<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anniversary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prize for &#8216;TORI AND LOKITA in Cannes Film Festival this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;max-width:30%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-shadow\" style=\"--awb-height:20px;--awb-amount:20px;background:radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e2e2e2 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);background:-webkit-radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e2e2e2 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);background:-moz-radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e2e2e2 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);background:-o-radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e2e2e2 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\" style=\"--awb-text-transform:none;\"><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Arnaud Desplechin<\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13983 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Arnaud-Desplechin-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Arnaud-Desplechin-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Arnaud-Desplechin-1.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arnaud Desplechin grew up in the northern French town of Roubaix. He attended the IDHEC film school in Paris and made two short films during his studies. At graduation, he had already written the screenplay for his feature d\u00e9but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La sentinelle <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1992<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would world premiere in the official competition of the 45<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> edition of Cannes Film Festival. He then made <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Sex Life&#8230; or How I Got into an Argument<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1996), which introduced a new generation of actors and received the C\u00e9sar trophy for Most Promising Actor for Mathieu Amalric\u2019s performance. In 2016 Arnaud received a C\u00e9sar for Best Directing for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Golden Days<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He directed and wrote the screenplay for The Nile Hilton Incident that won \u2018The Grand Jury Prize\u2019 at Sundance 2017, received a Guldbagge Award for \u2018Best Film\u2019 in 2018, was nominated as \u2018Best Foreign Film\u2019 at the C\u00e9sar Awards and was a box office hit with more than 400,000 tickets sold in France. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He directed action thriller, The Contractor (2022) with staring Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Kiefer Sutherland. Several episodes of the futuristic HBO-series Westworld (2018) and Showtimes-series Ray Donovan. The thriller Tommy (2014) with Ola Rapace, Moa Gammel and singer-songwriter Lykke Li for whom he also directed the music video I Follow Rivers that have about 80 million views on YouTube. His film debut came with Metropia (2009), a dystopic animation with Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, Juliette Lewis, Vincent Gallo and Udo Kier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival as the opening film for Critics\u2019 Week. Tarik Saleh also directed the documentaries Gitmo: The New Rules of War (2005) and Sacrificio: Who Betrayed Che Guevara (2001) together with Erik Gandini. He has directed nine features, among them <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not Here to Be Loved<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mademoiselle Chambon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (C\u00e9sar Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2010), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Few Hours of Spring<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Measure of a Man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The latter was selected in the official competition at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Vincent Lindon won the Best Actor Award, followed by a C\u00e9sar. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Woman&#8217;s Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the adaptation of Maupassant&#8217;s novel of the same title, followed. This film had its world premiere in the main competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2016, later winning the Louis Delluc Award. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018 his next film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screened in the competition at Cannes. He has directed six short films that have been selected and awarded in numerous festivals, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petits pas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cannes Directors\u2019 Fortnight) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De sortie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Jean Vigo Prize 2006). Hosted at the Villa Medici in Rome, he wrote his first feature film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vincent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, released in 2015 and selected in more than forty festivals in France and abroad. He studied in Turin, receiving a Bachelor&#8217;s of Arts degree in film history and critique (with honors and publication recommended). At an early age, he began collaborating with important film institutions, in Turin and throughout Italy: Festival da Sodoma a Hollywood, National Film Archive of the Resistance, Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani, Taormina Film Fest, Bellaria Film Festival, Rai Radiotelevisione Italiana. Upon returning to Belgium, she started working in the industry as a script supervisor and assistant director.
