After completing her studies at the Brussels “Institut Supérieur des Arts”, she returned to Romania with a friend — Stephane Karo, who became the manager of the Clejani music band — whom she accompanied on a documentation field trip about Gypsy music. That trip led to her first documentary, Clejani (2005), which was to be followed by another two, also centered on Roma characters. The latter of these, Un jour mon the princess viendra, the story of three girls looking for western husbands, is the one that triggered the idea of the script for the Bergman’s first fiction film. Seule à mon mariage is “the story of the emancipation of a young Roma woman, a woman in search of freedom,” the director said in an interview for Cineuropa. The protagonist is Alina Şerban, the young Romanian actress of Roma ethnic origin, whom the director gave her the role on the spot after seeing hear act in a play. The Clejani band resurfaces in this film, with the music signed by Vlaicu Golcea and interpreted by violinist Caliu, one of the eminent members of the band.

Seule à mon mariage will be screened on Saturday, October 27 at 19:30 in the Peasant’s Museum Cinema, in the presence of Marta Bergman and Alina Şerban. Alone at My Wedding / Seule à mon mariage is the third collaborative work of Frakas Productions and Hi Film Productions (Ada Solomon), is distributed in Romania by microFILM and will be shown in cinemas starting November 2.

Born in Marseilles, Jean-Bernard Marlin studied cinematography at ENS Louis Lumière in Paris. Shéhérazade, his debut feature, is born out of a newspaper article: the love story of a pimp and a young prostitute in a poor area of Marseilles. The director wanted from the very beginning to shoot in actual locations and cast non-professionals resembling the characters that inspired the story. After a period of documenting the streets of Marseilles, the screenplay was written, followed by eight months of intense casting in schools and social centers. “We have seen almost all young people in Marseilles, from all neighborhoods,” the director said in an interview in Cannes. Dylan Robert, the lead actor, was discovered by the director among a group of youths recently freed from prison, while Kenza Fortas, the main actress, was discovered in a Roma camp.

The director rewrote the dialogues with the two actors before shooting, and the result is “an impeccable sample of cinema-verité,” according to Cineuropa — a dynamic and moving story. In Cannes, surrounded by the press and the public, the protagonists intensely lived the most surprising experience of their lives, as Dylan received permission from the social center where he was consigned to attend the festival, while Kenza brought her whole family and friends to see her stepping on the red carpet. For the two, filming and participating in the festival were undoubtedly an experience with the potential to change their destinies — a wish that the film seems to propose.

Shéhérazade will be screened at Cinema Elvire Popesco on Friday, October 19, at 17:30, in the presence of the director, followed by a Q&A session.

One year ago, the film festival world was taken by surprise by the emergence of a little-known Hungarian director, Ildikó Enyedi, who reaped the Berlin Golden Bear for On Body and Soul. Zsófia Szilágyi, Enyedi’s assistant to On Body and Soul, picked on that and aimed high, ending up by having her first feature — One Day — selected this year in Cannes in the Semaine de la Critique section.

One Day started from a friend’s letters, detailing her experience as a mother of young children.
