The 9th edition of the festival (October 19th \u2013 28th), will take place at Cinema PRO, Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinemateca Union, and Cinema Muzeul \u021a\u0103ranului.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/girl\/\"><strong><em>Girl<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, by Belgian newcomer Lukas Dhont, winner of the Cam\u00e9ra d\u2019Or \u2013 the same prize Corneliu Porumboiu also received for <strong><em>12:08 East of Bucharest,<\/em><\/strong> in 2006 \u2013 also received the awards for Best Actor and the FIPRESCI prize in Un Certain Regard, along with the Queer Palme. The film tells the story of Lara, who dreams of becoming a ballerina. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/girl\/\"><strong><em>Girl<\/em><\/strong><\/a> &#8211;\u00a0looks terrific, is not afraid to tackle a number of difficult subjects and features a star-making performance from acting and dancing talent Victor Polster,\u201c stated The Hollywood Reporter following the film\u2019s world premiere. Main actor Victor Polster was just 15 years old during filming and was chosen at the end of a six month long casting process that included over 500 candidates. <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/girl\/\"><strong><em>Girl<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is Belgium\u2019s submission for the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/border\/\"><strong><em>Border<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, by Ali Abbasi, winner of the Un Certain Regard prize, features Tina, a customs officer with a delicate nose, appreciated by her colleagues for her talent at sniffing out the guilty and the ashamed. Variety reviewed the film as \u201can exciting, intelligent mix of romance, Nordic noir, social realism, and supernatural horror that defies and subverts genre conventions.\u201c Border is Ali Abbasi\u2019s sophomore feature, following his 2016 debut <strong><em>Shelley<\/em><\/strong>, which premiered at the Berlinale and featured <strong>Cosmina Stratan<\/strong> (<em>Beyond the Hills<\/em>) in the main role. <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/border\/\"><strong><em>Border<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>is Sweden\u2019s proposal for the 2019 Oscars.<\/p>\n<p>This year marks a half century since Jean-Luc Godard, supported by Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut and other auteurs of the French New Wave, initiated the uprising which led to the cancelation of the Cannes Film Festival in 1968. Following this event, a new section of the festival was inaugurated in 1969: the independent <em>Director&#8217;s Fortnight<\/em>, where daring films were to be selected without any ideological constraints. \u201cGreat cinema makers are very close to anarchists,\u201c declared Godard at this year\u2019s Cannes press conference, where he was awarded the <strong>Special Palme d\u2019Or<\/strong> for his most recent film, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/le-livre-dimage\/\"><strong><em>Le Livre d\u2019Image<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The film \u201eis a work that reprises many of Jean-Luc Godard\u2019s familiar ideas, but with an unexpected urgency and visceral strangeness. It\u2019s an essay film with the body-language of a horror movie,\u201c according to The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/capharnaum\/\"><strong><em>Capharna<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00fc<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>m<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, by Lebanese actress and director <strong>Nadine Labaki<\/strong>, was awarded the Jury Prize in the Cannes Official Selection. Labaki had previously debuted in <em>Director<\/em><em>&#8216;<\/em><em>s Fortnight<\/em> with <strong><em>Caramel<\/em><\/strong> (2007) and returned in 2011 with <strong><em>Where Do We Go Now?<\/em><\/strong> in <em>Un Certain Regard<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The film tells of a little boy who decides to sue his parents for giving him life. During development, Labaki interviewed children living in disadvantaged conditions, and so the theme of the film was born. \u201cAre you happy you were born?\u201d was one of the questions the children were asked. \u201c99% of them responded \u2013 you know what? I\u2019m really not! I didn\u2019t ask to be born,\u201d disclosed The Hollywood Reporter in an interview with the director. <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/capharnaum\/\"><strong><em>Capharna<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00fc<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>m <\/em><\/strong><\/a>was filmed over a six-month time span in Beirut, with Labaki expressly using non-professional actors. Following the film\u2019s premiere in Cannes, the audience gave a 15 minute standing ovation. <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/capharnaum\/\"><strong><em>Capharna\u00fcm <\/em><\/strong><\/a>is Lebanon\u2019s submission for the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/donbass\/\"><strong><em>Donbass<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, winner of Best Director in Un Certain Regard, director Sergey Loznitsa tells of the heavy conflict zone in the Ukrainian region of the same name between Ukrainian nationalists and supporters of the Donetsk People\u2019s Republic, a proto-state supported by Russia. In 13 episodes, Loznitsa paints the portrait of a society affected by years of manipulation and propaganda. <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/donbass\/\"><strong><em>Donbass <\/em><\/strong><\/a>is the fourth film that brings the director to Cannes.
