Unraveling in the same period this year, Les Films de Cannes \u00e0 Bucarest<\/em> (October 19th-28th) and the National Theatre Festival<\/em> (October 19th-29th) will pay homage to Lucian Pintilie<\/strong>, the Romanian director who has marked, with his personality and vision, the theatre as well as Romanian cinema for the past 50 years.<\/p>\n

\u201eI think that\u2019s just how I was born, with a catastrophic vision and a huge thirst for love,\u201d declared Lucian Pintilie in a 2003 interview with Rom\u00e2nia Liber\u0103.<\/em><\/p>\n

Les Films de Cannes \u00e0 Bucarest<\/em> will be showing Lucian Pintilie\u2019s body of films, while the National Theatre Festival will present novel recordings of two of the director\u2019s plays: The Wild Duck<\/em><\/strong>, <\/strong>by Henrik Ibsen, performed at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Ville, in 1981, and The Magic Flute<\/em><\/strong>, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.<\/p>\n

Lucian Pintilie\u2019s cinematic tribute evening will take place on Saturday, October 20th, at Cinema Muzeul \u021a\u0103ranului. Members of the theatre and film industry are expected to attend the event, including close collaborators and friends of Lucian Pintilie: Victor Rebengiuc<\/strong>, the iconic actor of his films, actresses Mariana Mihu\u021b\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Maia Morgenstern<\/strong>, filmmakers Cristi Puiu<\/strong> and Corneliu Porumboiu<\/strong>, as well as producers Constantin Popescu\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Silviu Stavil\u0103<\/strong>. Also present for the tribute will be Marin Karmitz<\/strong>, filmmaker, producer, and distributor, who accompanied Lucian Pintilie during production of The Oak<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1992) \u2013 the film which triumphantly brought the director back to film and to Cannes, after his forced exile. Also set to screen at the tribute is Horea Laptes<\/strong>\u2019 documentary F\u0103r\u0103 titlu<\/em><\/strong>, about Lucian Pintilie, and Why are the Bells Ringing, Mitica?<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, produced in 1979, and banned by the Communist regime until its fall in 1990.<\/p>\n

\u201eIt\u2019s been banned once again by Ceausescu: no problem, if it\u2019s good, it can also wait, I told myself, and I went to make The Wild Duck<\/em> in Paris, at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Ville,\u201d mentioned the director in Positif<\/em> magazine, in 1992.<\/p>\n

Lucian Pintilie\u2019s tribute as theatre and opera director will take place on Saturday, October 27th, at HUB FNT\/ Arcub Gabroveni<\/em>, starting at 11:00 am. Following the screenings of the The Wild Duck<\/em><\/strong> and The Magic Flute<\/em><\/strong> performances, as well as the presentation of the Bricabrac<\/strong> volume, a commemorational discussion will take place, with figures such as film critic Michel Ciment<\/strong>, Marie-France Ionesco<\/strong>, Victor Rebengiuc<\/strong>, Mariana Mihu\u021b, Dorina Chiriac, Sanda Manu, George Banu, Serge Peyrat<\/strong> (the director\u2019s assistant of 15 years at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de Ville), and other actors and collaborators taking part.<\/p>\n

Screenings of Lucian Pintilie\u2019s at Les Films de Cannes \u00e0 Bucarest<\/em> will begin Friday, October 19th, with The Oak<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <\/em>at Cinema Muzeul \u021a\u0103ranului (in the presence of Marin Karmitz<\/strong>), and will continue at Cinemateca Union with: Sunday at Six<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1965) \u2013 Sunday, October 21st, Ward 6<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1978) \u2013 Monday, October 22nd, Terminus Paradis<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>(1997) \u2013 Tuesday, October 23rd, Reconstruction<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(1968) \u2013 Wednesday, October 24th, Too Late<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1996) \u2013 Thursday, October 25th, An Unforgettable Summer<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>(1994) \u2013 Friday, October 26th, Niki and Flo<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2003) \u2013 Saturday, October 27th, The Afternoon of a Torturer<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2001) and Tertium non datur<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2006) \u2013 on Sunday, October 28th. Members of the cast and crew will be present at each screening and will hold Q&A\u2019s with the public.<\/p>\n

Entrance to the retrospective is free of charge and seating is limited.<\/p>\n

The Lucian Pintilie homage<\/strong> is organized in partnership between Les Films de Cannes <\/em>\u00e0 <\/em>Bucarest <\/em>and the National Theatre Festival<\/em>, in collaboration with Filmex Romania and the National Center of Cinematography, with the support of Funda\u021bia 9.<\/p>\n

A selection of films will also be screened in the Les Films de Cannes\u2019 local editions.<\/p>\n
