Audiences will have the chance of watching the much-awaited <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/cold-war\/\"><em>Cold War<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong> by Pawel Pawlikowski, winner of the Best Director award, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/ayka\/\"><strong><em>Ayka<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>, <\/em>by Sergey Dvortsevoy, awarded for Best Actress for Samal Yeslyamova, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/dogman\/\"><strong><em>Dogman<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, by Matteo Garrone, winner of the Best Actor award for Marcello Fonte and <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/3-faces\/\"><strong><em>3 Faces<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, by Jafar Panahi, awarded (ex-aequo) for Best Screenplay.<\/p>\n<p>Following his much applauded and awarded <strong><em>Ida<\/em><\/strong>, winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2015, Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski <em>(<strong>My Summer of Love<\/strong>)<\/em> went to Cannes this year with a film inspired by the life of his parents, taking home the award for Best Director. <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/cold-war\/\"><strong><em>Cold War<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>, <\/em>set during the time of its turbulent namesake in Poland, is a passionate love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatally mismatched and yet fatefully condemned to each other. A critics and audience darling,<a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/cold-war\/\"> <strong><em>Cold War<\/em><\/strong><\/a> brings back the nostalgia of Polish cinematography and is considered a shoe-in for the Oscars even before Poland sets forth their official nomination, according to <em>The Guardian<\/em>. With a soundtrack featuring jazz and rock&amp;roll rhythms that perfectly winds itself with the couple\u2019s stormy relationship, the film is\u00a0\u201eone of the most colourful things you&#8217;ll ever see in black and white\u201c &#8211; <em>Time Out<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After winning the Un Certain Regard Award in 2008 for his debut <strong><em>Tulpan<\/em><\/strong>, Kazakh director Sergey Dvortsevoy and actress Samal Yeslyamova return to Cannes with <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/ayka\/\"><strong><em>Ayka<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the story of a young woman from Kyrgyzstan, an illegal refugee in Russia. In 2010, 248 newborns were abandoned at Russian hospitals by Kyrgyz\u00a0women.\u00a0 This statistic was the inspiration for <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/ayka\/\"><strong><em>Ayka<\/em><\/strong>,<\/a> \u201ea raw, intimate drama [where] the limits of empathy are tested,\u201c according to <em>Screen Daily.<\/em> Following its Cannes premiere, Film New Europe noted that Samal Yeslyamova \u201eturns an intense and moving performance in a visceral role that takes a no holds barred stance in showing just the depths of misery and suffering she confronts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Described as an <em>urban western<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/dogman\/\"><strong><em>Dogman<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is set in an Italian suburb, somewhere at the crossroads between metropolis and wilderness. Marcello, a likeable dog groomer, discreet and welcomed by everyone, finds himself caught in a power relationship with Simone, a former boxer who terrorizes the entire neighborhood. Inspired by a true story, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/dogman\/\"><strong><em>Dogman<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>is the most recent work of Matteo Garrone, winner of two awards in Cannes for <strong><em>Gomorrah <\/em><\/strong>(2008), and <strong><em>Reality<\/em> <\/strong>(2012). Named a \u00abmodern-day Buster Keaton, almost a silent movie actor,\u201c by Garrone himself, Marcello Fonte was employed as a social worker when he met the director and was given the role that garnered him the Best Actor award in Cannes, along with international recognition.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/3-faces\/\"><strong><em>3 Faces<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the charismatic actress Behnaz Jafari is affected by the story of a girl who\u2019s family forbids her to study at the Tehran conservatory. Behnaz turns to director Jafar Panahi to help her solve the girl\u2019s predicament. Director, writer and documentarist Jafar Panahi was arrested on numerous occasions in Iran due to his non-confirmist style and the critical themes prevalent in his films. In 2010, Iranian authorities forbade him to make films in his native country for the following 20 years; a command he disregarded with determination and consistency. He is currently in his eighth year of prohibition, and <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2018\/en\/3-faces\/\"><strong><em>3 Faces<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is his fourth completed and awarded film in this period, following <strong><em>This is not a Film<\/em><\/strong> (2011) presented in Cannes, <strong><em>Closed Curtain<\/em><\/strong> (2013, Berlinale Silver Bear for Best Screenplay) and <strong><em>Taxi Teheran<\/em><\/strong> (2015, Berlinale Golden Bear). \u201eThis is Jafar Panahi, a filmmaker with more cause than most to feel victimized, turning a deeply respectful, artful and compassionate eye outward, to the struggles of others, and finding such empathy there that the film amounts to a heartfelt statement of solidarity,\u201c according to <em>Variety <\/em>in the lead-up to its world premiere in Cannes<em>.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>We invite you to stay up to date with the latest news of the 2018 edition of <em>Les Films de Cannes \u00e0 Bucarest<\/em>, by following filmedefestival.ro and the official Facebook page.
