Special screening of Roma, by Alfonso Cuarón
The Golden Day, now a tradition at Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest, offers spectators the unique opportunity to watch, consecutively, and on the same day, titles which have been awarded the grand prize at the most prestigious international film festivals : Berlin, Cannes, and Venice.
The Golden Day, prezented by Renault, will take place on Sunday, October 28th, with screenings of: Touch Me Not, by Adina Pintilie, winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin, Shoplifters, by Hirokazu Kore-eda, winner of the Palme d’Or in Cannes and Roma, by Alfonso Cuarón, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice.
Screenings will take place at Cinema PRO (Touch Me Not), at Cinema Elvire Popesco (Shoplifters), and Grand Cinema & More in Baneasa Shopping City (Roma). The film, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, was shot on 65 mm in 4K format and mixed on Dolby Atmos, and it is at the request of the director for the film to be shown in this format only. As such, Roma will be shown on the most well-equipped screen in Romania, the Grand Ultra at the Grand Cinema & More in Baneasa Shopping City.
Roma marks Cuarón’s Mexican homecoming, and may be his most personal film yet, having been inspired by the women from his childhood. The film will not be shown on Romania’s silver screens. The screening at the festival will be the only one of its kind, offered with the approval of the director and producers, as a sign of esteem for Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest.
„An immersive bath in some of the most luxuriantly beautiful black-and-white images you’ve ever seen,“ wrote The Hollywood Reporter in a review following its Venice premiere.
A versatile filmmaker, with a career spanning 27 years in which he has managed to direct both art-house and blockbuster films, Cuarón has won more 100 awards at festivals all over the world, with his 2013 Gravity (starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) winning two awards at the Oscars. The Best Director award he won that year was the first to ever be handed to a Mexican director in the history of the Academy Awards. His first nomation at the Oscars was, however, announced in 2001 for Y Tu Mamá También, which propelled actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal into the international spotlight, and brought Cuarón to Hollywood.
Roma chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s. Cuarón presents an ode to the matriarchy that encompassed his childhood and he does so by filming in the locations where these events actually took place, borrowing furniture and objects from his relatives (70% of the furniture featured in the film belong to the director’s family, as reported in an interview with Vanity Fair), and casting actors that looked as much alike as their real counterparts.
In addition to the Golden Lion, the film was also awarded with the SIGNIS Ecumenical Prize.
In Venice, Roma vied for the grand prize with films like The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the latest film by the Coen Brothers, First Man, by Damien Chazelle, Suspiria, the remake by Luca Guadagnino, and Peterloo, by Mike Leigh.
„This is a film that steals in and snatches your heart“ (The Telegraph). Shoplifters, the most recent film by South Korean director Hirokazu Kore-eda, winner of this year’s Palme d’Or, is the story of a family of petty thieves who find an abandoned little girl and decide to raise her as if she were their own. „Who better than Kore-eda, a director who whispers instead of shouts, is able to capture contradictions and issues though such a subtle, unforced style of storytelling?,“ writes The Hollywood Reporter about the director who debuted in Cannes for the seventh time. Shoplifters will be released on the 26th of October, distributed by Independenta Film.
On the fluid border between reality and fiction, Touch Me Not, Adina Pintilie’s debut feature and winner of the Golden Bear and Best Debut in Berlin, speaks of the need for human contact and fear of intimacy, about how we can love without losing ourselves. Laura, Tomas, and Christian, enter into a therapeutic adventure of battling the instinct for self-defense, and confronting taboos. The Hollywood Reporter called the film: „ A relentlessly immersive tour de force. An eye-opening look at human sexuality. Striking for its intelligence, self-assurance and originality.“ Touch Me Not will be distributed in over thirty countries in Europe, North America, and Asia. In Romania, the film will be released in cinemas at the beginning of 2019. The screening at Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest represents a special opportunity to watch the film on the silver screen this year.
The 2018 edition of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest will be taking place between October 19th-28th at Cinema PRO, Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinema Muzeul Țăranului, Cinemateca Union and Grand Cinema & More in Baneasa Shopping City.
