The drama inspired by the fight of the activist group Act-Up Paris against the general indifference towards victims facing the AIDS virus in France during the \u201890s, is also France\u2019s submission to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film. The film was sold in nearly 40 countries, and in Romania it will be screened for the first time at Les Films de Cannes \u00e0 Bucarest, being distributed in cinemas by Voodoo Films.<\/p>\n<p>Winner of an Oscar for the screenplay <strong><em>Lost in Translation<\/em><\/strong>, Sofia Coppola added to her record the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival for the film <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/the-beguiled\/\"><strong><em>The Beguiled<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The action is set during the American Civil War, with Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning in the lead roles, whose isolated existence from the rest of the world in a girls\u2019 boarding school in Viriginia is disrupted by the appearance of the Union Corporal McBurney (Colin Farrell), to whom they offer refuge, and care for his wounds. Sofia Coppola rewrites the story of the film with the same title made by Don Siegel in 1971, this time, from the perspective of the three female protagonists. The film is distributed in Romania by Ro Image.<\/p>\n<p>Compared by <em>The Times<\/em> to Martin Scorsese\u2019s <strong><em>Taxi Driver<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<em>This is the <\/em>Taxi Driver<em> for a new century<\/em>\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/you-were-never-really-here\/\"><strong><em>You Were Never Really Here<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, by Lynne Ramsay, was awarded both the Best Screenplay Award and the Best Male Actor Award, given to Joaquin Phoenix. In a role that recalls Robert De Niro\u2019s interpretation of Travis Bickle in Martin Scorsese\u2019s story, Phoenix is a former FBI agent, taciturn and brutal, trying to recover Nina (Ekaterina Samsonov), the apparently kidnapped, teenage daughter of a politician, by using his favorite weapon, a hammer. Produced by Why Not Productions, the film will have its premiere in France on 8<sup>th<\/sup> November and is distributed in Romania by Voodoo Films.<\/p>\n<p>Also from the official competition, the winner of the Palme d\u2019Or will be premiered in Romania, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/the-square\/\"><strong><em>The Square<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, directed by Ruben \u00d6stlund, as well as the drama <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/loveless\/\"><strong><em>Loveless<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, the auteur of such feature films as <em>Leviathan<\/em> (Best Screenplay, Cannes 2014\/nominated for an Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film) or <em>Elena<\/em> (Un Certain Regards Special Jury Prize, Cannes 2011). <strong>These films are distributed in Romania by Independen\u021ba Film<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The selection of Les Films de Cannes <\/strong><strong>\u00e0<\/strong><strong> Bucarest also includes the premiere of the film <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/jeune-femme-montparnasse-bienvenue\/\"><em>Jeune Femme (Montparnasse Bienvenue)<\/em><\/a>, directed by L<\/strong><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><strong>onor Seraille, presented in the Un Certain Regard competition and awarded the Camera d\u2019Or Award. A story that has at its forefront, Paula<\/strong> (Laetitia Dosch), having recently returned to Paris after a long absence, preparing for a new start, but without a life plan. The film discusses a generation that <em>\u201cseems to live only in the now \u2026 paradoxically, some people might find themselves overwhelmed by all the possibilities and choices available\u201d<\/em>, writes <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. From the Un Certain Regard competition, the thriller <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/wind-river\/\"><strong><em>Wind River<\/em><\/strong><\/a> will be screened in the festival \u2013 Best Director, Un Certain Regard, 2017 \u2013 directed by Taylor Sheridan, the writer of such screenplays as <em>Sicario<\/em> or <em>Hell or High Water<\/em>, the latter being nominated for an Oscar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emmanul Gras<\/strong>\u2019s documentary, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/makala\/\"><strong><em>Makala<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a foray into the life of a young charcoal seller in the Congo who struggles to ensure a better future for himself and his family, was awarded the International Critics Week Grand Prize this year at Cannes. Also at International Critics Week, the SACD Prize (Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques) was awarded to <a href=\"https:\/\/filmedefestival.ro\/les-films-de-cannes\/editia-2017\/en\/ava\/\"><strong><em>Ava<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, directed by <strong>L<\/strong><strong>\u00e9a Mysius<\/strong>, a production about a young girl who is gradually losing her sight. Filmed on 35mm, <em>Ava<\/em> is <em>\u201cboth a complex character portrait and a heartsore farewell to the ephemeral images that will be among the last she sees.
