The winners of this year’s Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Screenplay award and Best Actor award are invited at Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest and will have talks with the audience following the screening of their films.

Today, at Cinema PRO, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest is inviting you to a talk with the French director of Moroccan origins Robin Campillo, winner of this year’s Cannes Grand Prix, for 120 Battements par minute (120 Beats per Minute), chosen to represent France in the competition for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The drama inspired by Act-Up Paris activists’ actions to fight the general disregard of AIDS victims in the 90’s France has already been sold in almost 40 countries and will be shown for the first time in Romania, tonight starting 20.00, with the director attending the screening and having a Q&A at the end. The film’s leading character, actor Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, is also expected at the festival both in Bucharest, where he will be attending the film’s screening on Thursday, October 19, at 16.30, at Cinema Elvire Popesco, and in Iași, where he will open the second edition of Les Films de Cannes à Iasi, on October 20.

Another unmissable encounter is scheduled on Tuesday, October 17, at 20.30, at Cinema PRO, this time with Lynne Ramsay, winner of the Cannes Best Screenplay award for You Were Never Really Here. The film also brought Joaquin Phoenix the Best Actor award, for his part as an incommunicative and brutal former FBI agent, attempting to rescue Nina (Ekaterina Samsonov), the teenage girl of a politician, who had apparently been kidnapped. Born in Glasgow, Lynne Ramsay is considered one of the boldest British directors in contemporary independent cinema. Cannes Festival acknowledged her talent from the very beginning. In 1996, she won the Jury Prize for the graduation short film Small Deaths, and two years later she received the same distinction for her third short film, Gasman. In 2000, her feature film debut Ratcacher received the Jury’s Special Mention in Cannes’s Un Certain Regard. And in 2011, We Need to Talk About Kevin was the only British production in the Palme d’Or competition.

This week’s surprise at Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest is the additional screening of Loveless (Jury Prize, Cannes 2017), to be held on Wednesday October 18, at 21.00, at cinema Union, with director Andrey Zvyagintsev attending. The first two screenings of the film were sold-out. Zvyagintsev confirmed his participation to the festival’s eigth edition and will talk with the audience following the screening on October 18.

Andrey Zvyagintsev started directing in 2000, and launched three years later his first feature film, The Return, that quickly became that year’s sensation, winning the Golden Lyon in Venice. The Russian director is no stranger to Cannes, where his films have always received awards – The Banishment (2007, Best Actor award – Konstantin Lavronenko), Elena (2011, Special Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard section) and Leviathan (2014, Best Screenplay Award).

And let’s not forget about French director’s Laurent Cantet presence in Bucharest. Laurent Cantet, to whom the festival has dedicated a focus, will be arriving in Romania on October 18 and will introduce his film Retour à Ithaque (Return to Ithaca), that will be preceded by a screening of his short film Tous à la manif, recipient of the Jean Vigo award in 1994. On October 19 he will be attending the premiere of his latest film, L’Atelier (The Workshop), competing in Cannes’s Un Certain Regard this year, and will answer filmgoers’ questions in a debate moderated by Boglarka Nagy.

Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest kicked off with over 5000 viewers at the screenings held over the first weekend and with celebrated Hungarian director Béla Tarr being present both in Bucharest and in Cluj.  This year too the festival will continue having in Bucharest and in the other cities special guests – directors and actors – to converse with Romanian audiences after the screenings, in intense talks about films, cinema or just about life.

Every evening, after the screenings, cinephiles are expected for a glass of wine at Apollo 111 (Strada Actor Ion Brezoianu, nr. 23-25) to talk about the films of the day and about those following.
