Today, October 26th, the third edition of Les Films de Cannes à Iaşi begins. The festival is opened this year by Ioana Uricaru, who will present her debut feature film, Lemonade, The film is scheduled on Friday at 20:00, at Cinema Ateneu, and the director will be available at the end for a discussion with the public. Also, Iași film lovers will have the unique opportunity to meet with the Mexican director Carlos Reygadas and the actress Natalia Lopez, who will be present at the Our Time screening, on Saturday, October 27th, at 18:30, at Cinema Ateneu. The Iași edition takes place from 26th to 28th October at Cinema Ateneu.
Ioana Uricaru graduated from the Academy of Theater and Film in Bucharest and holds a doctorate in critical studies at the University of South California, Los Angeles. From 2015, she lives in the United States where she has a university teaching career. Before his feature-lenght debut with Lemonade, she co-directed the collective multi-episodes film Amintiri din Epoca de Aur / Memories from the Golden Age and made short films. Lemonade was presented in premiere this year at the Berlinale, after which it was selected in over 25 festivals, purchased for distribution in 12 countries and received six awards at international festivals, including the Sarajevo Film Festival directing prize.
The guest of honor of this edition is Mexican director Carlos Reygadas, who will be present in Iaşi for the screening of his latest film Our Time / Nuestro Tiempo, during the festival. Reygadas also plays the leading role alongside his real-life partner,, Natalia López. The Mexican director is considered to be the most radical voice of contemporary Mexican cinema because of his successive selections in Cannes Festival which the press has adored and hated with the same passion. He debuted with his first feature-length film in the section Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, in 2002. Japón has immediately drawn the attention of both the critics and the jury, and the film received a special Caméra d’Or mention.
Reygadas was selected for the first time in competition at Cannes Festival with Battle in Heaven, in 2005, then, in 2007, he won the Jury award with Silent Light, a tribute to Carl Th. Dreyer, a film about forbidden love in the midst of a Mexican Mennonites community. Post Tenebras Lux, received in 2012, the Cannes Festival Best Director Award. In Our Time, he takes his radical approach even further and is strongly inspired by his personal life in creating a story about passion, treason, family and freedom Presented in the official competition of the Venice Film Festival 2018, Our Time has brought to Reygadas eloquent comments from international critics. Natalia López, who plays the main female role, is the film’s editor and screenwriter. She has been active in the field as a film editor since 2006, working with Amat Escalante and Carlos Reygadas. She is known for editing films such as Heli, Silent Light, Jauja and Post Tenebras Lux.
