The most prominent Iranian filmmaker, Asghar Farhadi, the only director to have won two Oscars for Best Foreign Film, will be coming to Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest. The 9th edition of the Bucharest festival will open with the same film that also opened Cannes this year : Everybody Knows, the director’s most recent title, starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
On this occasion, the festival has organized a retrospective of Farhadi’s work, which will present About Elly (2009), and A Separation (2012), the film which brought him his first Oscar. Following the screening of this film, Farhadi will hold a masterclass, open to the public. The masterclass will take place on Saturday, October 20th, at Cinema Elvire Popesco, starting at 4pm. Entrance is free as long as seating is available – reservations can be made on eventbook.ro.
Asghar Farhadi was born in 1972 in Iran, and by 1998 had finished a degree in theatre studies and directing, had completed six shorts, written a number of screenplays, and created a series of radio and TV series. In 2003, he presented his first feature length film, Dancing in the Dust, the first in a series of complex films, full of suspense, which brought to light the subtle social clashes and differences of mentality in Iranian society.
As he turned 40, Farhadi was included in Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world, after A Separation had traveled the world, winning more than 70 awards, among which, the Berlin Golden Bear. It was his fifth feature, had gained more than one million admissions in France alone, and confirmed his status as a distinct cinematic voice, especially following About Elly, which had won the Silver Bear for Best Director. „In Iran, at this momento, we need – more than anything else – for the public to think,” attested Farhadi in „The Guardian”.
Everybody Knows tells the story of Laura, who returns to her hometown to attend her sister’s wedding, together with her children. Unexpected events take place, however, throwing her holiday into disarray. The special screenings of Everybody Knows will take place during the festival in honour of Asghar Farhadi’s presence in Bucharest; with a nation wide release Schedule for January 2019, through Independenta Film.
A Separation, which screens on Saturday, October 20th at 1:30pm at Cinema Elvire Popesco, tells the story of Nader, who hires a young woman to care for his ailing father, without knowing that she’s pregnant and that her husband hasn’t given consent for her to work.

In About Elly, a group of longtime friends organize a trip to the Caspian Sea. Sepideh, the main organizar of the trip decides to invite Elly, hoping that she won’t be indifferent to Ahmad’s advances, a friend of hers and newly single.

Bucharest-born Marin Karmitz, director and producer, will be present for a Q&A with the public. In Dialogue with Marin Karmitz will precede the special screening of his film Coup pour Coup on Sunday, October 21st at 2pm, at Cinema Elvire Popesco.
