Sundance Film Festival winner to open the 7th edition of the American Independent Film Festival<\/span>.<\/b><\/h3>\n

<\/b>Special screening of the first episode of SPY\/MASTER<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<\/div>

The American Independent Film Festival returns to Bucharest this year with its 7th edition, with screenings in Bucharest cinemas from April 21st-24th at Cinema Elvire Popesco and Cinemateca Eforie, and outdoor screenings from June 23rd-25th at Roaba de Cultura in Her\u0103str\u0103u Park. At the same time, AIFF will have screenings in Cluj, between April 21st-23rd, at the Arta and Victoria cinemas, a local edition presented by Fortech, a GlobalLogic Company.<\/span><\/p>\n

As every year, AIFF brings a selection of the best American independent films to Romanian audiences, a type of cinema that is becoming “more and more successful and exciting with each passing year” as Eugene Hernandez – director of the Sundance Film Festival – the largest festival of independent films in the United States – remarked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Original productions developed outside the Hollywood system are the focus of the festival again this year, and the first day of screenings will bring two premieres: the feature film A THOUSAND AND ONE<\/a> – Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2023 at Cinemateca Eforie and the first episode of the HBO Europe miniseries, SPY\/MASTER<\/a> which will be screened at the Elvire Popesco cinema in the presence of the crew.<\/span><\/p>\n

“A mesmerizing Teyana Taylor stars in director A.V. Rockwell’s feature debut – <\/span><\/i>A THOUSAND AND ONE<\/b> – a captivating love story set in New York City, a film about motherhood and survival in a rapidly changing city,” <\/span><\/i>observed The New York Times, which continues: <\/span>“the feature is like a miracle. It’s a small project only in a prosaic sense. It’s an intimate, human film about ordinary people fighting ordinary battles.”<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Though she struggles moving from shelter to shelter with her six-year-old son Terry, Inez lives life on her own terms, with no regrets, in 1990s New York. When Terry is threatened to be put back into foster care, she decides to kidnap him.<\/span><\/p>\n

A THOUSAND AND ONE<\/b><\/a> “is a tender, often painful portrait of the unstable but loving bond between a mother and her son, both spat out of the foster care system. It is also a broad evocation of a city in the throes of accelerating gentrification and discriminatory policing,”<\/span><\/i> writes The Hollywood Reporter about the film, which will have its national premiere at the American Independent Film Festival .7.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on a script developed at the WRITE A SCREENPLAY FOR… (the script development workshop presented by AIFF and organized by Asociatia Cinemascop), the mini-series <\/span>SPY\/MASTER<\/b><\/a> premiered at this year’s Berlinale Series selection as the first project from Central and Eastern Europe in the section.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having been included in a seven not-to-be-missed selection at the Berlinale, Variety sums up the action like this: “in 1978, a spy from the East defects to the West and so begins a game of between the CIA, Securitate, KGB and Stasi.” The miniseries features a week in the life of Victor Godeanu, Nicolae Ceau\u0219escu’s right-hand man and his most important advisor, and an undercover KGB agent who must escape Romania before his cover is blown by two hardened counterintelligence agents.<\/span><\/p>\n

The HBO MAX production stars Alec Sec\u0103reanu, Parker Sawyers, Svenja Jung, Ana Ularu, Lauren\u021biu B\u0103nescu, Andreea Vasile, Nico Mirallegro, Iulian Postelnicu, Claudiu Bleon\u021b, Elvira Deatcu, Alexandra Bob and is written by Adina S\u0103deanu and Kirsten Peters. Antony Root, Johnathan Young and Anke Greifeneder are executive producers, Ioanina Pavel is creative producer, Vikt\u00f3ria Petr\u00e1nyi and Judit S\u00f3s are producers at Proton Cinema, and Tudor Reu is producer on behalf of Mobra Films. The festival screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the team.<\/span><\/p>\n

HBO and HBO Max subscribers in Europe and the US will be able to watch SPY\/MASTER from May.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the festival, the finalists of the 5th edition of the WRITE A SCREENPLAY FOR… Screenplay Competition organized by Cinemascop Association with the support of PRO TV will be announced. This year, writers were invited to submit a script for a TV miniseries or a comedy or thriller feature film. More than 300 applications were received and will be reviewed by Gabriela Iacob – Head of Scripted Development PRO TV and Cristian Mungiu – director and screenwriter, founder of the American Independent Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year the festival continues its mission to raise social and community issues and to donate all proceeds from ticket sales to humanitarian causes. Audiences are urged to support these causes by attending the film and participating in AIFF debates.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span>In previous editions, the following non-governmental organizations have benefited from the support of AIFF spectators through the festival: Casa Bun\u0103, Ovidiu Ro, Casa Share, Our Big Day Out volunteer program, Expert Forum Association and Save the Dogs and Other Animals Association.<\/span><\/p>\n
