The laboratory was founded in 2013 with the support from the United States Embassy in Ukraine. During two week-long sessions participants from different regions of Ukraine work on editing their short documentary films. Despite this being the first experience in directing and editing for some participants, their work at the laboratory results in creation of 10 short documentaries each year. Vlad studied at the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. Maria&#8217;s mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia, when the girl was two years old. Now Maria documents her journey to occupied Crimea in search of crucial answers: why the illness becomes a stigma and what are the ways to being together. Maria is in search of Mother, under the sign of birthmark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Shevchenko is a journalist and a documentary director. Counterintuitively enough, these people, united by a common idea of securing the well-being of Askania Nova, find it impossible to agree among themselves. Our hero, Nikolai Khlebniuk, was fired from his job at the reserve 20 years ago and now lives in a dilapidated hut in Askania; in spite of that, he has no plans to move elsewhere anytime soon. Our film is about the secret that keeps Nikolai in this place for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrii Lytvynenko graduated from the National Karpenko-Karyi University of Theater, Film and Television in Kyiv in 2012, majoring in film directing. In 2013, he studied at Warsaw&#8217;s Wajda School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrii has made several short films and was the author of the idea of the anthology \u200bBeyond Euro (2013, Docudays UA). Why do people deny their own memory of Soviet experience? Is it possible to recreate historical age through personal stories and what is more important \u2013 collective or personal memory? Where lies the intersection point between personal and collective experience? The answers to be explored within the future documentary research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pavlo Dorohoi is a documentary photographer, documentary filmmaker, and researcher of Soviet photography of the second half of the 20th century. He was born in 1985 in Kharkiv. He studied at the school of modern photography &#8220;DOKDOKDOK&#8221;, works with archival and vernacular photography. Ongoing projects concern the relationship between personal and collective memory. It is based on the archive video materials and interviews excerpts from the research projects on LGBT history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent Ukrainian filmmaker Svitlana Shymko (1986) focuses on social and political issues. After studying documentary film through the DOC NOMADS program, she gained attention thanks to her debut The Doctor Leaves Last (2014). The main characters are three members of an ambulance crew: a doctor, a paramedic and a driver. The film depicts the challenges and the patients they face during their holiday shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired by documentaries that helped to change the world for the better, Dmytro Hreshko realized that he wanted to be part of the movie-making process too. Since 2019, he has been studying and shooting documentaries.
