The American Independent Film Festival<\/b> announces a visual and musical cinematografic experience with new titles by three of the most interesting and original contemporary American directors. <\/span>Vox Lux<\/i><\/b>, by Brady Corbet, starring Natalie Portman and Jude Law, <\/span>Mandy<\/i><\/b>, directed by Panos Costmatos, starring Nicolas Cage and Andrea Riseborough and <\/span>The Mountain<\/i><\/b>, by Rick Alverson, starring Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan, will premiere at the 3<\/span>rd<\/span> edition of the festival, between April 12<\/span>th<\/span> \u2013 18<\/span>th<\/span>. The New York Times declared that \u201ean apocalyptic star is born,\u201d upon reviewing Natalie Portman\u2019s performance as Celeste in <\/span>Vox Lux<\/i><\/b>. <\/span>Vox Lux<\/i><\/b> is Brady Corbet\u2019s sophomore feature after <\/span>The Childhood of a Leader <\/i><\/b>which brought him awards for Best Director and Best Debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2015. Exploring the spectacle of the contemporary world, the 30-year-old director tells the fascinating story of an ordinary teenager\u2019s rise to pop-dom following a terrorist shooting at her school, which leaves her critically injured. Guided by her well-intentioned manager (Jude Law), Celeste becomes a symbol of celebrity cult and of the power of mass media, in a film about the forces that mold us as individuals, as nations, as deities; impregnated by a score comprising of original pieces by Sia and original songs written by Scott Walker. <\/span><\/p>\n

For Scott Walker, one of the most innovative and legendary composers of the 21<\/span>st<\/span> century, <\/span>Vox Lux<\/i><\/b> marked the second collaboration with Brady Corbet, and signaled the last score Walker composed before his death on the 22<\/span>nd<\/span> of March, 2019, at the age of 76, leaving behind a huge experimental pop heritage. Songs like <\/span>Make it Easy on Yourself<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The Sun Ain\u2019t Gonna Shine<\/span><\/i> are hits that consecrated the Walker Brothers, with Variety stating that that \u201ctheir fanclub once had more members than that of the Beatles at one point.\u201d Walker\u2019s solo albums took his poetic style into the avant-garde musical sphere. In <\/span>Vox Lux<\/i><\/b>, the musical compositions are brimming with a musical force that is in synch with Celeste\u2019s inner power and the global adulation of her popularity. <\/span><\/p>\n

Keeping the experimental musical tone and moving through pop to rock genres, J\u00f3hann J\u00f3hannsson composed, together with guitar player Stephen O\u2019Malley from \u201cSunn o)))\u201d, the score of <\/span>Mandy<\/i><\/b>, directed by Panos Cosmatos. J\u00f3hannsson\u2019s music and Nicolas Cage\u2019s character are considered by Indiewire as being \u201cat the center of a hypnotic cinematic experience that\u2019s equal parts deranged revenge story and abstract study of grief.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cosmatos\u2019 film marked J\u00f3hannsson\u2019s last composition of his career, having previously finalized the music on Denis Villeneuve\u2019s <\/span>Arrival<\/i><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mandy<\/i><\/b> tells of Red Miller, who lives isolated in the wild with his wife Mandy until cult leader Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roach) ruins his life. His revenge story is built via the\u00a0\u201cblack metal, menacing ambient, doom drone, and piercing orchestrations in the mode of Italian experimental composer Giacinto Scelsi,\u201d according to Pitchfork.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mountain<\/i><\/b>, directed by Rick Alverson debuted at the 2018 Venice Film Festival, walking away with a special mention. The film, based in the 50s, tells of Andy, a solitary teenager, who, following his father\u2019s (Udo Kier) death, gets a job making photographs with Wallace Fiennes (Jeff Goldblum), a doctor specialized in lobotomy. Enacted by Tye Sheridan in a style reminiscent to Tom Hardy and Barry Keoghan, Andy discovers the U.S. of the 50s through the lens of his boss\u2019 patients. Alverson\u2019s excentric script boils until the revelatory climax of its title, in tune with its characters\u2019 deepening into a Lynchian and Hopperesque visual plane. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rick Alverson is known for films like <\/span>The Comedy<\/span><\/i> (2012), <\/span>New Jerusalem<\/span><\/i> (2011) and <\/span>The Builder<\/span><\/i> (2010). <\/span><\/p>\n
