- McQueen, the documentary about the legendary fashion designer, and Wildlife, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Carrie Mulligan, on the festival’s screens
The American Independent Film Festival has announced new titles that are to play during its third edition. Under The Silver Lake, directed by David Robert Mitchell, known for It Follows, McQueen, the “meticulous portrait of fashion’s master of audacity” (The Guardian), directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, and Wildlife, Paul Dano’s directorial debut, known for roles in There Will Be Blood and Little Miss Sunshine are the new indie titles ready to surprise festival audiences between April 12th and 18th at Cinema PRO and Cinema Muzeul Țăranului. Tickets will be available soon on eventbook.ro and on the Eventbook network.
Under The Silver Lake, David Robert Mitchell’s neo-noir premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and is being shown for the first time in Romania, at the American Independent Film Festival, on April 12th, at Cinema Ateneu, during the local edition of the festival in Iași. In Bucharest, the film will be presented on the 14th and 15th of April, at Cinema PRO and Cinema Muzeul Țăranului.
Considered by Variety as an „homage to David Lynch,“ the films tells of Sam (Andrew Garfield), a young man from Los Angeles, obsessed by pop culture, who spies on his neighbours and reads conspiracy theories instead of looking for a job. When Sarah, his young and enigmatic neighbour, suddenly disappears, Sam takes off after her, crossing the city on a surreal obsessive chase, which drowns him in the dark world of the City of Angels.
Under the Silver Lake stars Andrew Garfield, known for his roles in Spider-Man (Marc Webb), Silence (Martin Scorsese), Hacksaw Ridge (Mel Gibson), and Riley Keough, Elvis Presley’s niece, who has had roles in The House That Jack Built (Lars von Trier) and American Honey (Andrea Arnold). Distributed by Independența Film in Romania, the film hits theatres on April 26th.
Nominated for two awards at the BAFTAs, McQueen is the first film about the famous designer, Alexander McQueen. The film will have a special screening at the festival on Saturday, April 13th, at Cinema PRO, where the audience will have the chance to admire a selection of pieces inspired by the master, by Romanian designers Andreea Buga (Argo Art) and Isabelle Vijiiac (Atelier Isabelle Vijiiac).
A real modern fairytale with gothic nuances, the controversial designer’s biography “conveys the outrageous glory of the designer’s work and poignantly unpicks his inner issues” (The Guardian) through exclusive interviews with family members and friends, found archival footage, and a refined musical score. Alexander McQueen was an edgy genius, fascinating and a profound influence on fashion, who fought his entire life with his own demons, while winning the title of the enfant terrible of the haute couture world through his daring collections. McQueen is distributed by Atelier de Film in Romania.
Jake Gyllenhaal will appear for the second time in the American Independent Film Festival’s program, in Wildlife, alongside Carrie Mulligan (An Education, The Great Gatsby). Wildlife marks Paul Dano’s directorial debut, and manages to put on screen “a tender, gorgeous, and exquisitely understated drama about a family that loses its faith in itself,” according to IndieWire.
The film, which premiered in Sundance in 2018, is based on Richard Ford’s book of the same name, and tells the story of the Brinson family, living in the 60s, through the lens of 14-year-old Joe. Joe is the only child of Jeanette (Carrie Mulligan), a housewife, and Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal), a pro golfer. When an uncontrollable wildfire hits the border with Canada, the man of the family decides to go help battle the disaster, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Abruptly forced to become an adult, Joe bears witness to his mother’s struggle with their new family situation.
A dramatic coming-of-age story, Wildlife sets itself apart through Carrie Mulligan’s spectacular performance, and will be screened on the 13th and 16th of April at the American Independent Film Festival in Bucharest. The screening program and news about the festival and its events will be posted on filmedefestival.ro, on the American Independent Film Festival Facebook Page and on Instagram (@AmericanIndependentFilmFest). Tickets will be available soon on eventbook.ro and through the Eventbook network.
