The third edition of the American Independent Film Festival has officially announced its full program. Films that have premiered in and been selected to some of the world’s most important festivals, such as Sundance, Toronto, Cannes, Venice, and Telluride will be screening in Romanian premiere, between the 12th and the 18th of April, at Cinema PRO and Cinema Muzeul Țăranului in București, and in Iași, at the Cinema Ateneu.
Known in the film industry for a diverse, original, and attractive filmography, director Jacques Audiard will be attending the third edition of the American Independent Film Festival for the premiere of his most recent film, The Sisters Brothers, on Friday, April 12th, at 8:00 pm at CinemaPRO. The full screening program is available as of today on the filmedefestival.ro, and tickets can be purchased through Eventbook.ro.
The Sisters Brothers, Audiard’s western starring John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed and Rutger Hauer, was shot partially in Romania, in the summer of 2017, after Audiard noted the country’s filming potential while on his first visit to present his Palme d’Or winning Dheepan at Les Films de Cannes a Bucarest in 2015.
The Sisters Brothers became one of the biggest budget foreign films to be shot in Romania; only set design, costumes, and horses were accorded a budget of over 5 million euro by producers. Audiard will also be present at the second screening of the festival, on Saturday, April 13th, at 4:30 pm, at Cinema Muzeul Țăranului. There will be a Q&A session following the screenings.
For The Sisters Brothers, Audiard and his cowriter Thomas Bidegain rewrote Patrick de Witt’s novel of the same for the screen. A bestseller in North America (and later translated into Romanian at Polirom). John C. Reilly bought the rights to its cinematic remake, optioning it to Jacques Audiard, of whom he had been a long-time admirer.
Costumes were created by Italian-American Milena Canonero, four-time winner at the Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, for Chariots of Fire (H. Hudson), Barry Lindon (S. Kubrick), Maria Antoaneta (S. Coppola) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (W Anderson). The Sisters Brothers premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, where it won the Silver Lion for Best Director.
Jacques Audiard’s career began as Assistant Director to Roman Polanski in The Tenant, in 1976. 18 years later, he made Regarde les hommes tomber, a road-movie starring Mathieu Kassovitz and Jean-Louis Trintignant, his first feature length film which would unleash a body of work premiered and awarded in Cannes, at the César’s, BAFTAs and Lumière Awards. Since the 70s, he has written over 20 screenplays for film and TV, directed clips, and acted, all while continuing to direct, with seven feature films, among which De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté (2006, 8 César Awards, the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Film), Un Prophète (2009, Cannes Grand Prix, 9 César Awards, one BAFTA Award, and nominated at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes), De rouille et d’os (2012), starring Marion Cotillard. The Sisters Brothers is distributed by Voodoo Films in Romania, and will be released on 45 screens in 26 cities starting on April 19th.
Screenings will take place between April 12th – 18th at Cinema PRO and Cinema Muzeul Țăranului.
