The Latest Films by Xavier Dolan, Dardenne Brothers and ‘’American Honey’’, Premiering in Bucharest

In keeping with the tradition it has established throughout its previous six editions, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest is showing for the first time in Bucharest the most anticipated films in Cannes festival selection. Names like Ken Loach, Xavier Dolan, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Asghar Farhadi, Jeff Nichols or Andrea Arnold will reach the big screens from October 14th to 23rd.

The child prodigy of contemporary cinema, Xavier Dolan has won this year’s Grand Prix in Cannes and the Ecumenical Jury Prize for Juste la fin du monde/ It’s Only the End of the World. Adapted from a stage play, the film follows the commotion experienced by a family when, after 12 years of absence, one of their members, a writer, returns home with the definitive announcement of his imminent death. Several French stars are part of the cast: Gaspard Ulliel, Nathalie Baye, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux. ‘’It is a brilliant, stylized and hallucinatory evocation of family dysfunctions’’ writes the critic Peter Bradshaw in his review in The Guardian, adding: ‘’Watching it, listening to it is like having your head in a speaker bin for a Motörhead concert’’. Aged 27, Xavier Dolan has already directed six feature films, all having received multiple awards.

Another premiere shown in the Bucharest festival is American Honey, for which Andrea Arnold won the third Jury Award in her career. ‘’The freshest film about young people in America since Larry Clark’s Kids”, as The Film Stage labels it, has fueled the career of talented actress Sasha Lane, in a complex, intense and challenging movie about the adventures of a teenager travelling the country with a group doing door-to-door sales. Shia LaBoeuf plays one of the main roles. Indiewire.com deems Andrea Arnold is one of the best directors at the moment.

Inspired by a fascinating love story, that made history in the USA, Loving, directed by Jeff Nichols, celebrates the bravery of two lovers, Richard and Mildred Loving, who got married and arrested because of violating the law banning interracial marriages and then spent almost nine years in courts defending their right to be together. In 1967, the case Loving v. Virginia reached the Supreme Court and thus changed the fate of millions of couples. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga play the main parts. Loving competed for the Palme d’Or, and will be screened in Bucharest before its release in the US scheduled for November.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, two of Cannes’s favorites, are coming back with a suspense film: La fille inconnue /The Unknown Girl ‘’Dardenne’s brothers’ diamond in the rough” as the magazine Les Inrockuptibles calls it. One evening, after hours and after closing her practice for the day, a doctor hears the doorbell but does not answer. The following day, the police let her know that a young woman was found dead at her door. Actress Adèle Haenel performance is brilliant and intense, in an utterly gripping film. The Unknown Girl is the tenth movie of the famous duo that have already received the Palme d’Or twice, for L’Enfant and Rosetta.

Among the award-winning films in Cannes premiering in the festival in Bucharest are I, Daniel Blake (d. Ken Loach), Palme d’Or winner, The Salesman, directed by Asghar Farhadi, the only film in the competition to have received two awards – for screenplay and best actor (Shahab Hosseini). Celebrated Israeli director, Eran Kolirin, will present in Bucharest his latest film, Beyond the Mountains and Hills, and the Turkish filmmaker, Mehmet Can Mertoğlu, will talk about his debut feature Album, co-produced by Romania and winner of the France 4 Visionary Award in the Semaine de la Critique section. Mohamed Diab’s Clash will also be premiering in Bucharest.

Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest unfolds this year between October 14th and 23rd 2016, with an extended edition and the most anticipated films in Cannes Festival selection. For the first time, selected films will be shown simultaneously in Cluj-Napoca, Iași and Timișoara.

The films La fille inconnue and Juste la fin du monde are distributed in Romania by Independența Film, and American Honey and Loving by Ro Image 2000.
