Olivier Assayas Masterclass and ‘’Personal Shopper’’ premiering in Bucharest

Renowned French director and screenwriter Olivier Assayas will be arriving tomorrow October 20th in Bucharest for his first meeting with the Romanian audience, at the premiere of his film Personal Shopper, at the Auditorium Hall of Romanian National Art Museum starting 20.45. Winner of the Award for Best Director (ex-aequo) in Cannes, Personal Shopper is a supernatural psychological thriller, starring Kristen Stewart in the leading role. The filmmaker, special guest to the seventh edition of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest, will give an access free masterclass at the University of Theatre and Film ‘’I.L. Caragiale’’ on Friday, October 21, at 11.00 a.m. The talk will be moderated by well-known Polish film critic Michał Oleszczyk (rogerebert.com).

The festival also features a section dedicated to the filmmaker, Focus Olivier Assayas, showcasing four of his films: L’Eau froide (Cold Water) (1994), Demonlover (2002), L’Heure d’été (Summer Hours) (2008), and Personal Shopper (2016). Film lovers can also meet the director at Cinema Elvire Popesco, starting 18.30, for the screening of L’Eau froide (Cold Water).

Olivier Assayas (aged 61), a fervent cinephile, has authored over 25 ambitious and eclectic films, spanning over three decades. His debut, Désordre (Disorder), received an award at Venice Festival in 1986 and subsequently L’Eau froide (Cold Water) (1994), Irma Vep (1996), Les Destinées sentimentales (Sentimental destinies) (2000), Demonlover (2002), Clean (2004) or Sils Maria (Clouds of Sils Maria) (2014), all shown in Cannes, asserted him as one of the most important voices in contemporary cinema. He also received many international prizes for L’Heure d’été (Summer Hours) (2008), Carlos (2010), Après Mai (Something in the Air) (2012), becoming one of the most celebrated French directors.

Another special guest arriving these days in Bucharest is well-known Israeli director Eran Kolirin. On Friday October 21, starting 18.30, at Cinema Elvire Popesco, the filmmaker will talk about how his compelling debut The Band’s Visit (2007) changed his life; the film received a prize in Cannes and was shown in over 50 important festivals. On Saturday from 20.30 at the same theatre Eran Kolirin will speak about the social and political backdrop against which was written the screenplay for Beyond the Mountains and Hills, selected this year in Cannes’s Un Certain Regard.

Until Friday, film lovers will enjoy the premieres of Paterson directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Adam Driver in the leading part, Mal de pierres (d. Nicole Garcia) starring Marion Cotillard or 6,9 pe scara Richter (d. Nae Caranfil).

This year the festival takes places at CinemaPRO, Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinema Muzeul Țăranului and MNAR Auditorium Hall. The program is updated on www.filmedefestival.ro and tickets are available on Eventbook.ro.


The seventh edition of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest is organized by the Cinemascop Association and Voodoo Films, in partnership with the Embassy of France and the French Institute in Bucharest. It is a cultural project financed by the National Center of Cinematography, SACD / Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques (Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers), the Cultural Project Centre of the Bucharest City Hall – ARCUB, within the cultural Program “Bucharest – the In-Visible City” 2016, Romanian Cultural Institute, Goethe Institute and the Embassy of Finland.

Les Films de Cannes à Cluj-Napoca (October 14th – 16th) is a project carried out with the support of the Cluj-Napoca Local Council and City Hall.

The Timișoara edition (October 21st – 22nd) is carried out with the support of the Timișoara City Hall.

The Iași (October 28th – 29th) edition is carried out with the support of Iași City Hall and the Association of Student Journalists in Iași.
