Maren Ade, German director, scriptwriter and producer, was born in 1976, in Karlsruhe and is based in Berlin. Together with Janine Jackowski and Jonas Dornbach, she owns the production house Komplizen Film. She studied at the University of Television and Film in München (HFF), production and media, followed by directing, where she graduated with the film The Forest for the Trees (2003) that won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance FF. Her second feature, Everyone Else (2009), won The Silver Bear and the Silver Bear for best actress (Birgit Minichmayr), in Berlin FF. This year, Toni Erdmann brought her the FIPRESCI Award for best film in the Official Competition at Cannes, and is Germany’s submission to the Oscars. The film is almost entirely shot in Romania and is the only movie launched in 2016 that BBC Culture recently included in its top The 21st Century’s 100 greatest films.
