The controversial French director of Argentinean descent Gaspar Noé returns to Bucharest, 5 years after he was the special guest of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest (this year on 23 – 29 October). He will bring his latest film, an adults-only sexual melodrama, Love, screened out of competition at Cannes and rated R. Saturday, 24 October, at 20:15, Studio Cinema, Gaspar Noé will present his film and participate in a Q&A session with the audience. The screening in Bucharest will be restricted for anyone under 18 and a ticket will cost 20 lei.
Described by the international press as a love story that’s extremely passionate and sensual, Love has already found itself the center of controversy. Two weeks after its premiere in France this summer, the film, which had initially been stamped with an -16, had its rating bumped up to -18 following the complaints made by a Christian association, Promouvoir. The most powerful arguments had to do with the unsimulated sex scenes that involve the starring actors of the film. “Love is a film of paradoxes: it was made to be seen in 3D at the cinema, but is risking to be distributed on DVDs-only in most countries, it is a French film with English dialogue, so that no subtitles are required, it is an intimate and somber film, haunted by the melancholy of lost loves, but has been released through a marketing campaign that centers on its porno aspects”, writes the French magazine Première.
The shock-film that made Gaspar Noé famous will also be screened at the festival – Irréversible (Cannes 2002), in which characters played by Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel confront the ultimate violence. Noé has also directed I Stand Alone (1998) and Enter the Void, part of the Cannes competition in 2009 and presented by the director at Les Film de Cannes à Bucarest in 2010, as well as a series of short films that questions the conventional depictions of sexuality in films. Love will be distributed in Romania by Independența Film.
Love, sex and adultery are also the subject of In the Shadow of Women by Philippe Garrel, the film that closed the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes 2015. The film by the well known French director, twice awarded the Silver Lion in Venice for I Don’t Hear the Guitar Anymore (1991) and Regular Lovers (2005), chronicles the trials and tribulations of a couple in which both partners have a secret lover each.
Tickets may be bought on the day of the screening, but also ahead of time, on Eventbook.ro and the ticket offices at the three participating cinemas. The price for one ticket is 15 lei for the last two screenings on weekdays, as well as all screenings starting at 17:00 or later during the weekend. For all other screenings during the week, the price is 10 lei. This year, the public may choose between two types of passes: there is a discount of 20% off the total price for either a set of 6 tickets at the same cinema, or 10 tickets at any of the three cinemas, valid for any of the films. Some screenings and events are free to enter.
