Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest comes back between October 14th and 23rd, for the seventh year in a row. This is an extended edition, with over 100 screenings of the most anticipated films of the Cannes Film Festival selection. For the first time, the festival will last for ten days and there will also be previews and screenings with special guests in the cities of Cluj-Napoca, Iași and Timișoara.
This year’s Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest will take place at CinemaPRO, Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinema Muzeul Țăranului and the Auditorium Hall at the National Art Museum. The Cluj-Napoca edition will take place during the weekend of October 14 to 16, at Cinema Victoria. The Timisoara edition will be organised between October 21 and 22, and the Iasi edition between October 28 and 29.
In six years, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest has grown into one of the most wide-ranging cultural events in the capital. Last year, the festival brought in over 15.000 viewers, numerous film screenings were sold out, and nearly half the tickets were bought before the festival even got underway. By popular demand, additional screenings were arranged after the festival had ended. In October, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest brings dozens of films for the first time in Romania, some of them with the filmmakers in attendance, as well as master-classes, round tables, retrospectives and other special events.
Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest came into being in 2010 at the initiative of director Cristian Mungiu, with the support of Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival. Their idea generated a trend, the festival spreading as far as Buenos Aires in 2014, under the name of Semana de Cine del Festival de Cannes. “We have projects to bring films all over the world. Cristian Mungiu is already organizing a showcase in Bucharest. It’s not so important for us as for the films”, Thierry Frémaux was quoted as saying last year for Variety.
