The sixth edition of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest will take place 23-29 October at Studio Cinema, Elvire Popesco Cinema and CinemaPRO. This year, we shaped the festival with the help of our audience: for the first time, following voting on the official site, people chose the third screening venue, CinemaPRO, as well as the official poster of this year’s edition.
In five years, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest has grown into one of the most wide-ranging cultural events in the capital. Last year, the festival brought in over 14 000 viewers, numerous film screenings were sold out, and nearly half the tickets were bought before the festival even got underway. By popular demand, additional screenings were arranged after the festival had ended. In October, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest brings dozens of films for the first time in Romania, spanning over 100 screenings, some of them with the filmmakers in attendance, as well as master-classes, round tables, retrospectives and other special events.
Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest came into being in 2010 at the initiative of director Cristian Mungiu, with the support of Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival. Their idea generated a trend, the festival spreading as far as Buenos Aires in 2014, under the name of Semana de Cine del Festival de Cannes. “We have projects to bring films all over the world. Cristian Mungiu is already organizing a showcase in Bucharest. It’s not so important for us as for the films ”, Thierry Frémaux was quoted as saying last year for Variety.
