Be A Critic At Cannes! Contest

  1. The Be A Critic At Cannes! contest is organized by the Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest festival, in partnership with Control N Cultural Association, with the assistance of the National Cinema Center. The event is supported by BRD – Groupe Société Generale.
  2. The call for entries for the first edition of the Be A Critic At Cannes! contest is open between 7 – 16 October 2015.
  3. After the deadline for entries, 10 young film critics will be selected in order to move on to a second stage of the contest. They will attend the festival Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest between 23 – 26 October. During the festival, they will participate in a series of special events set up under the umbrella title Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest – Debates: the conference Piracy and cinema. How do we make it work? and the debate How, why and for whom do we still write about films?. Additionally, they will be required to write three new articles relating to the conferences and the screenings of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest, following which the winner will be chosen. The winner will attend the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
  4. The contest is for young film critics, who must satisfy the following conditions:
  • they must have Romanian citizenship;
  • they must be under 35, with or without a formal education received in film;
  • they must consistently write about cinema in a publication, blog or website; and must have published a minimum of 4 texts in the last year.
  1. To enter the contest, those interested are required to send 4 reviews published in the last year (September 2014 – September 2015). Also, they must fill in the online application on the site of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest (www.filmedefestival.ro), Contest section, by 23:59 of 16 October 2015. Any application that is received later than this deadline will not be accepted.
  2. The 10 finalists will be determined by the Organizers on the basis of the online applications. All applicants will be informed about the results.
  3. The 10 finalists will enter the second stage of the contest and will get the chance to attend the Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest festival, between 23-26 October 2015. During the festival, they are required to:
  • attend the debate Piracy and cinema. How do we make it work? (Saturday, October 24) and conference How, why and for whom do we still write about films? (Sunday, October 25);
  • write three articles for their publications:
    • a preview for Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest (fresh takes on the event are encouraged). The article is to be published by October 23, 2015;
    • a review of a film screened at the festival. The article is to be published by November 1, 2015;
    • a report of one of the conferences that they attended. The article is to be published by November 1, 2015.
  1. The three texts will be reviewed by the Organizers, who will then pick the winner. Those who fail to publish the articles and fail to meet the requirements will not be allowed into this final stage.
  2. A daily lunch as well as the accommodation costs (for participants from out of town) will be handled by the Organizers for the duration of the participant’s attendance, between 23-26 October 2015.
  3. The Organizers are offering the 10 finalists accreditations for the Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest festival. In addition, the Organizers will arrange informal meetings between the participants and industry professionals that are guests of the festival.
  4. The winner of the Be A Critic At Cannes! contest will be picked by the Organizers, with the assistance of representatives of the French Institute in Bucharest.
  5. The Organizers will offer the winner of the Be A Critic At Cannes! contest transport, accommodation and accreditation to the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
